Neighbourhood Profile: Alta Vista

Alta Vista's Rideau River

Alta Vista is a wonderful, family-oriented neighbourhood located just south of downtown Ottawa. The area is known for its lush parks, vast green space, and strong sense of community.

Alta Vista, which gets its name from the city’s relative height – it’s higher than most of Ottawa – is a convenient and charming place to live. The neighbourhood has residents in all age ranges, with shopping, schools, and churches all within close proximity.

The two major shopping destinations in Alta Vista are the Elmvale Shopping Centre, located at Bank Street and Riverside, and the 85-store Billings Bridge Plaza, which was Ottawa’s very first shopping mall. Located on the north side of Smyth Road are the Ottawa Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. There is also another wing of the Ottawa Hospital located in Riverside. As many families live in Alta Vista, there are several schools to choose from which include: McMaster Catholic School, Alta Vista Public School, and Cantebury High School.

Having all of these services within the realm of this neighbourhood of 23,000 people is extremely convenient.

Of course, if any Alta Vista residents want to get into the city, it is never too far away, especially with two OC Transpo Transitway stations located in the neighbourhood: Pleasant Park and Riverside. In addition, there are two stations situated just outside the neighbourhood at Billings Bridge and Smyth.
